4iG enters energy sector - 27 August 2026

Press Release

4iG enters energy sector, investing in key industry of the future

In cooperation with international partners, 4iG is setting up a regional energy portfolio in the CEE and Western Balkan region, based on renewable and next-generation energy infrastructure.

  • 4iG is establishing a new business division in the energy sector that opens up growth opportunities in yet another key infrastructure segment alongside telecommunications, digital infrastructure and the space and defence industries. This move will also support the Group's international expansion strategy.

  • In establishing this new business division, 4iG founds a separate holding company with its own organizational structure, in a similar manner to that used for its other segments. This will serve as a regional strategic platform for international investment and technology partners.

  • 4iG's principal operations are inherently energy-intensive. By developing its own power-generating capacity, the Group can lower the exposure to energy in a long term, whilst creating synergies with its existing operations, and contributing to regional energy security.

  • As a decisive first step towards long-term energy security and independence for Central and Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans, 4iG Group:

    • Signed a Letter of Intent with US-based X-ENERGY to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) across the region;
    • Entered into a preliminary cooperation agreement to acquire a mid-sized turnkey wind farm in Poland; Has began exploratory work on wind power and related energy storage in North Macedonia, and on the potential acquisition of power generation capacity in Montenegro;
    • Made a binding offer, through its subsidiary 4iG Befektetési Kft., for the investment units of iG Tech Energy Private Equity Fund. This opens a multi-stage transaction that would give 4iG ownership of the fund's project company, which holds 49 percent of a 158 MW wind farm portfolio at five sites in north-western Hungary, previously owned by Iberdrola. The portfolio accounts for close to half of Hungary's installed wind capacity. If the offer is accepted, the transactions are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
  • The completion of the announced transactions and cooperation agreements is subject to further negotiations, the required due diligence processes and, where necessary, regulatory and other approvals.

Energy sector is set to become 4iG's latest critical infrastructure business line, alongside telecommunications, IT, digital infrastructure and the space and defence industries. The Group is now beginning to establish its regional presence in the sector. The new business division opens up opportunities for growth and diversification, expands 4iG's international presence, and contributes to the company’s performance through new revenue sources.

To set up the new business division, 4iG is establishing a separate energy holding company. Like the Group's other strategic business divisions, it is to operate as a regional platform with its own organizational structure. 4iG will also engage long-term international investment and technology partners, and set three objectives for the portfolio: acquiring operational power-generating assets, developing new capacity, and introducing next-generation energy technologies in the region.

All of 4iG's core operations are energy-intensive that makes the energy business a natural strategic fit. Building and acquiring its own power generation capacity can therefore create significant synergies with the Group's existing business lines, reduce its energy exposure over the long term, and make its energy supply more predictable. Regional investments may also support energy security in Central and Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans.

Joint effort with a US Firm in Advanced Nuclear Technology

4iG Group signed a Letter of Intent with the NASDAQ-listed American X-ENERGY, the leading developer of advanced small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) and fuel. The collaboration aims at the commercial deployment of X-ENERGY's Xe-100 reactor, focusing on opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe and Western Balkans. The joint effort will start with the assessment of a regional pilot project. 4iG’s long-term goal is to take the ownership stake as a strategic partner in nuclear reactors deployed across the region, thereby enhancing the security and stability of the region's energy supply.

The Xe-100 is a fourth-generation, high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) distinct from conventional water-cooled technology. X-ENERGY also manufactures the proprietary TRISO-X fuel required for its operation; providing both the core technology and fuel supply from the US partner enhances long-term operational predictability. This technology would create opportunities primarily for powering data centers and energy-intensive industrial processes. These use cases align closely with the 4iG Group’s business segments – ranging from data center and telecommunications infrastructure to off-grid power generation and defense industry applications.

Regional expansion in Poland and the Western Balkans

Building a presence in Central and Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans is a key part of 4iG's energy strategy, and one that draws on the Group's existing operations and partnerships in the region. To that end, 4iG is exploring both the acquisition of operational power generation assets and the development of new generation storage capacities.

4iG entered into a preliminary cooperation agreement to acquire a mid-sized turnkey wind farm in Poland, and due diligence on the project is now under way. Completing the transaction would open another Central and Eastern European market for 4iG and add an operating renewable asset to the emerging regional portfolio.

The Group is also exploring wind power and related energy storage in North Macedonia, where 4iG is currently building its 5G mobile network and plans to launch telecommunications services in 2027. The project under consideration could involve more than 100 MW of wind capacity, which is more than the country's entire installed wind capacity today.

Together with partners, the Group is also examining the potential acquisition of generation capacity in Montenegro. 4iG's existing business presence in the Western Balkans gives the energy business line a regional foundation to build on.

A significant position in Hungarian wind power

Alongside the regional developments, 4iG may also add significant operating power generation capacity in Hungary. Its subsidiary 4iG Befektetési Kft. made a binding offer for the investment units of iG Tech Energy Private Equity Fund. Completing the planned multi-stage transaction would give 4iG ownership of the fund's project company, which holds 49 percent of the Hungarian wind power assets previously owned by Iberdrola. The remaining 51 percent is held by the Premier Energy Group, listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange, which would become 4iG's strategic partner once the deal closes.

There are five sites in north-western Hungary that have a combined installed capacity of 158 MW – close to half of the country's total installed wind capacity. These plants are already operating; therefore, the new energy business line would start out with assets that already generate stable, predictable revenue. If the offer is accepted, the transactions are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

The announced offers and letters of intent set out the current framework for the individual transactions and collaborations. The implementation of the projects and the completion of the transactions are subject to further negotiations, the necessary due diligence and, where relevant, regulatory and other approvals. 4iG Group will provide further information on the ongoing development of its energy business at a later date.
